In Seven Years in Tibet, Heinrich Harrer has fled his pregnant wife for a Himalayan climbing expedition, but ends up in Tibet instead. There his friendship with the Dalai Lama transforms Heinrich for the better. Overcoming ego involves a journey from self interest to one of service and compassion for others. Only then will you cease being preoccupied with your own needs and dedicate yourself to the wellbeing of the greater good.
In A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle warns it is impossible for any individual still driven by ego needs to find true and lasting happiness. Only by releasing self centered, personal ambition can you experience greater joy.
